Last year on Alex’s birthday, I happened to be in his classroom with a few 8th grade boys when his phone rang. He answered and headed out into the hall to talk to his aunt, when one boy turned to me and said,
“Miss, he’s burning your foot!”
The other boy cracked up and let him know that the saying doesn’t translate very well into English, but it did teach me a new Spanish saying.
“Quemando la Pata” is an idiom for cheating.
Like typical middle schoolers, they assumed that any phone call from a girl other than me would mean that Alex was trying to spread the wealth.
So, no, Alex is not “burning my foot” but if he was maybe a good revenge would be to follow those directions and light his feet on fire! 🙂
