Punta Sal

This weekend we went to Punta Sal, a national park near Tela. Tela is the beach town about 1.5 hours from here so we took the bus up Friday night and headed out on the tour Saturday morning. The tour to Punta Sal starts with a boat ride to several different beaches, then there’s a hike through the jungle, snorkeling, and lunch on the reserve. The weather was beautiful and we had a great time, but by far the highlight of our trip was all the monkeys we saw! The trees at one of the beaches we stopped at were filled with howler monkeys!

A view through the jungle during our hike.

Alex got a picture of this giant spider on our walk through the jungle.

Mono!!!

The round lighter shaped part on the left is the baby’s head.

That’s a little baby monkey on the left!

The beach was full of almond trees. The monkeys sit in the top and eat the fruit around the almonds, then throw the nuts to the ground. We even tried a few almonds, but not the ones the monkeys had already eaten!

We could spot the almond trees because they had the clumps of reddish orange leaves like this one.

Me gusta monos!

The beach where we had lunch.

These are the boats we rode in to get to Punta Sal. It is about a 45 minute boat ride each direction.

At lunch! We are getting pretty used to fried plantains, rice and beans, and fish.:)

Big crab that Alex and Jesse found.

The boys trekked out to the point while Jenna and I slept on the beach. Here is the view they got looking back at us. If you zoomed in a lot you’d be able to see a very blurry version of us sleeping in the sand.

  2. These guys are really cute and I’m so glad you finally got to see them. Although the group we saw at Christmas piloting that speedboat were pretty special too.Put Punta Sal on the list of things I want to do when I come to Honduras again.

  3. Cute monkeys! We saw a momma and a baby monkey, but it was in the Animal Kingdom at Disney. Not quite the same. I am not a huge fan of that giant spider though!
