My sixth graders learned about Georgia O’Keeffe this quarter. We learned a bit about her life and took a look at some of her paintings. When I explained that she was born in Wisconsin like me, they asked if I had met her! When I explained that she died when I was just a little kid, they asked if my parents had met her! Gotta love sixth graders.
Although nobody I’m related to actually met Georgia O’Keeffe, I think the kids still enjoyed looking at her work. They took inspiration from her close-up flower paintings and created their own oil pastel drawings of zoomed in flowers. We learned about different values as well as color families like analogous and complementary. They finished the pieces off with contrasting watercolor backgrounds.
Enjoy!

You always find the creative kids; or you pull the creativity out of the kids you have. Either way, you are a good teacher.
