Personal Sculptures

After teaching my 10th graders two years in a row, I decided that for their last exam with me, I would test them on their ability to express themselves, rather than focusing on the skills they learned with me. Everyone was required to make a sculpture out of plaster gauze that had some kind of personal theme. They decorated the sculptures and then wrote me an artist’s statement explaining how their sculpture reflects them as an individual and how their work demonstrates how they have grown as an artist in the last two years. Using plaster in general was a blast, but I also really enjoyed reading about their sculptures and noticing the confidence they have gained in themselves as artists.
